ICT and Teaching for Understanding

This article considers some of the possibilities of the ways in which Information and Communications Technology (ICT) can support teachingfor understanding in primary schools. Drawing on researchanalysed for a Teacher Training Agency (TTA) study and work in progress in the North East of England supporting ICT training for serving teachers in England it suggests that there are clear possibilities for improving learners’ understanding using ICT. However, there are also limitations, such as pupils’ access to ICT, teachers’beliefs and knowledge of their subjectsand their ICT skillsas well as the rapid changes in technology itself, all of which make it difficult for these possibilities to be assimilated effectively.
